Thea Silver, colleague, Environment Funders Canada
Few people knew that Pegi and I went back over 20 years. We first met in the late 90s when she was with WWF Canada and I was with the Nature Conservancy of Canada, and we collaborated on the delivery of a program called “Natural Legacy 2000” – a partnership with the federal government in celebration of the Millenium. We then lost track of each other for a number of years as we both went on to new roles and new pursuits. Unbeknownst to each other, though, we eventually both vied for the Executive Director position with CEGN. I recall going through several rounds of interviews and reference checks, only to not be offered the job. My disappointment, however, was quickly replaced with understanding and agreement (and happiness), when Pegi’s appointment was announced. “What a perfect choice”, I recall thinking. “I would have hired her too!”
Fortunately, our paths crossed once again when I ‘became a funder’ and joined the Board of CEGN. As a board member for several years, and then as a consultant doing contract work CEGN/EFC, I had the privilege of being able to work with and learn from Pegi and her understated, subtle but impactful form of leadership. Pegi’s thoughtfulness, kindness and passion were unrivaled and truly a driving force in environmental philanthropy in Canada. I am profoundly grateful that the stars aligned as they did and we had that time, however short, to work so closely together. I am lucky to have had Pegi as a colleague and a friend.
