Julie Markham, board member, Project Canoe
One of one of my fondest PC memories is Pegi - gosh wonderful Pegi - deciding that we should go visit the basecamp so she could show me where I'd be living - we drove up to Temagami - I want to say it was mid-may - it may have been earlier (end of april? i'll see if I can figure it out but suffice it to say it was spring in toronto) - only to arrive on the Mine Landing road to several feet (at least knee high) of snow! We parked at the end of the driveway into Briggs - and hiked our way in. It was beautiful -but a bit of a shocker to both of us. But always intrepid and willing Pegi- was game to hike in and make the most of it. I think of her that way on our training canoe trips as well. The first two years she joined us for at least 2-3 nights and was always a calming presence -quiet, in the background but fierce in her belief and dedication to the values of PC, the joys of bringing youth to the wilderness and awareness of our need to protect the environment. She never wanted the spotlight- was always more interested in championing others - trip leaders, the youth, the board members - but there she was for years working so hard in the background to make it all come together. I remember also that first year - walking into her home office - and seeing the stacks of papers each representing different fundraising proposals and evident of how much work she poured into PC. I was very fortunate to work with her.
